"Love the writing, love the writing, love the writing...
                            the rest will follow."
                                                              Jane Yolen

Sound advice from one of the best.  And author visits are an excellent way to inspire a love of words in students and adults alike.

There are two things I love to do, one is writing and the other is talking with children.  If perchance, I can talk to children about the writing process . . . well then, I'm in heaven!    And I especially enjoy answering their questions, no matter if they're about writing or my pets.

Each of my presentations is structured to be fast paced, informational and interactive. I want to make your school's Author Visit a memorable and educational experience.  So I would be willing to discuss tailoring presentations to fit your schedule, but please keep in mind each one covers a lot of information.  In order to shorten a presentation or storytime, we'd have to eliminate something from it.

SCHOOL VISITS

Two presentations are offered in a half day visit and three to four in a whole day.  Presentations are 50 minutes to 1 hour in length.

The depth of the discussion is based upon the age group.  I offer a brief view of the writing process for the youngest students and get more in depth with the older grades.

Each presentation has a basic breakdown of:

  • A 15 to 20 minute discussion:
    • my life as a writer
    • the writing/publishing process from submission to book with visuals
    • Where DO ideas come from?
  • Read The Three Grumpies - for older groups we discuss the pattern method and the rule of using "3's"
  • A 10 to 15 minute question and answer session
  • Writing exercises tailored for all ages
  • Coloring pages and pencils as souveniers
    All supplies are included.

LIBRARY VISITS AND STORYTIMES

One presentation of one hour is offered with a basic breakdown of:
  • A 15 to 20 minute discussion of:
    • my life as a writer
    • the writing/publishing process from submission to book with visuals
    • where DO ideas come from?
  • Read The Three Grumpies
  • A 15 minute question and answer session
  • Grumpy face craft
  • Coloring pages and pencils as souveniers
Presentations can be tailored to suit the average age of the attendees

   All supplies are included.

SELLING BOOKS

The decision to sell is up to you. You can order direct and most publishers offer a discount, allowing you to either pass the discount onto your buyers or use sales to fundraise.

The presentation content does not change either way.

I have the contact information you would need.  Please allow six to eight weeks for delivery to ensure plenty of time to sell books and prepare them for my arrival.

Autographing books is one of my favorite things to do . . .

MY REQUESTS

  • I prefer presentations are scheduled by classroom or whole grade levels as opposed to assemblies. The smaller the group, the more individualized the presentation and the more I connect one on one with students.
  • ideally, a large carpeted space such as in a media center where students can be brought to me in shifts.  If I don't have to pack and unpack for each presentation, it saves time.
  • ten minutes between sessions to re-group my materials and my thoughts
  • a chair and a long table so I can spread out
  • at least one teacher remain with each session
  • water
  • detailed directions to you school
  • for each classroom to read my book to their students and to try some of the curriculum and discussion activites before my arrival.
